SME is a professional services firm providing full-suite accounting services to private enterprises, high net worth individuals and non-profit organizations. As a Senior Accountant, your responsibilities will include:

Engagement Execution

  • Preparation of review and compilation working paper files, including unaudited financial statements with notes.
  • Conducting audits including working paper files and financial statements with notes.
  • Performing financial and system analysis.
  • Preparation of corporate income tax returns including proposing solutions to corporate tax issues.
  • Assisting in client/partner meetings or conducting short meetings independently, as required.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Planning Engagements

  • Analyzing research to ensure thorough understanding of each client’s industry and business.
  • Meeting with the client to identify expectations, issues, and challenges.
  • Negotiating fees directly with the client under the direction of a Partner.
  • Establishing the accounting and tax approach to the engagement, making effective use of team members’ skills, and managing the assignment within time and budgetary requirements.
  • Involvement in planning engagement objectives and determine audit strategies.

Managing Engagements

  • Preparing and/or reviewing complete financial statements, notice to reader working paper files and related notes, internal and external audits and audit representations, tax returns and reports for delivery to the client.
  • Reviewing work of the team to ensure that all work is completed and documented in accordance with prescribed standards.
  • Demonstrating strong technical knowledge and having the ability to research issues and present alternatives and conclusions.
  • Monitoring the progress of the team members towards completion of work and adjusting the work plan when necessary.
  • Continuously communicating with the Partner in respect to engagement progress – risks, issues, variances from plan in terms of time and budget.

Completing Engagements

  • Taking full ownership of file completion.
  • Analyzing engagement economics and explaining variances from plan.
  • Approving billing for review by the Partner.
  • Developing strong relationships with clients to facilitate the completion of work.
  • Identifying potential opportunities to provide additional services to your clients.

Assisting with Practice Management:

  • Assuming a coaching performance management role.
  • Develop relationships and networks internally and externally.
  • Manage a client portfolio, including being the main point of contact for clients, following up on documents and questions and ensuring due dates are met.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required.

The skills and qualifications needed for this position include:

  • Canadian CPA designation.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in an accounting firm.
  • Dedication to collaboration.

  • Detailed understanding of Canadian GAAP and GAAS.
  • Extensive background with Accounting Software.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to manage relationships.
